Crofton Parish is a fairly large community with a population of circa 4,500 housed in 2,200 dwellings, it is therefore important that we maintain our quota of parish councillors.

Parish elections take place every four year. At the election in May 2003 there were less than the thirteen nominees for the thirteen seats on the parish, therefore an election wasn’t necessary. Members were co-opted during the course of 2004 to bring the council up to the full complement of 13. In July 2005 the community was saddened to learn of the death of the parish clerk, for the past 15 years, John Shillitoe. In September the council appointed Barry Riley as the new parish clerk.

In 2005 Cllr Graham Jackson was presented with a rose bowl to commemorate 50 years as a parish councillor. At the September meeting Cllr Jackson announced his retirement from the council. Trevor Chalkley was appointed chairman of the council in May 2006.

The 13 councillors were all nominated for the elections due in May 2007. No other nominations were made and the 13 were duly re-elected.

12 candiates were nominated for the Parish Council elections in May 2011 and once again, without the need for a ballot, the candidates were elected.

At the January 2012 meeting, the council held a minutes silence to reflect on the life and pay tribute to the late Cllr Julius Voros who had recently passed away. Jayne Wilby was co-opted onto the council

The last election ballot for Parish Councillors was May 1987

Being a parish councillor is a voluntary task, often maligned, rarely praised, with few rewards, certainly none financial, but extremely good for the soul. Although the lowest level of local government, it’s important because of  it’s close contact with the community.
